TATU, International Disgrace of Russia
February 10, 2003

For the last several weeks foreign mass media, especially gay media, has been paying a lot of attention to a “lesbian pop-duet Tatu” from Russia. Their single “All The Things She Said” is number one in all single charts of Eastern Europe and Tatu is considered to be “the most beneficial and best selling project”. Having conquered the Eastern Europe Tatu headed to the West. Tatu’s popularity is rapidly growing: the first place in charts of Italy, Spain and Switzerland, last week – Great Britain.
It is not only the song that is being spoken about; the video with “the two girls in a school uniform hugging and kissing” is of main focus as well. In the very beginning gay mass media was very pleased with Tatu’s revelations: that they are a couple, many years together, sharing one stage, one bedroom, nowhere apart. However, these illusions didn’t last long, there started to appear different bashful rumors that both girls have boyfriends in Russia, the newspapers quoted someone’s Grandma who strongly objected rumors about her granddaughter being a lesbian. More serious and respectable press was more honest (more obvious about their
position) having proclaimed that all this lesbian boom is just an attempt of the sly producer to attract attention, gain popularity and get as much money as possible with the help of this fashionable image, in other words to get everything that is of no secret in Russia. Scandalous rumors always have a tendency to spread around very quickly. Some said that BBC refused to show video because of the “lesbian kisses”, others mentioned that BBC didn’t refuse but showed it late at night, the third talked about non-commercial organizations accusing mass media of “pedophilia-pop music” promotion, the fourth blamed Tatu for their focus on “dirty corny guys”.
This is just a little part of mass media opinions. What does the Lesbiru.Com team think about it? We deliberately avoided any mentioning of this stinky project under the name “Tatu” on our web-site. But it seems to be the high time to express our opinion about it.
To be aware of all the responsibility we consider “Tatu” to be the international disgrace of Russia, mostly a disgrace, a shame for us, lesbians.
In the very beginning the innocent song “I Lost My Mind” (“All The Things She Said”) and provocative video that was more or less decent seemed like irony and parody, now the glimpses of children’s underwear is not enough for the big money invested in this project with the help of producer Ivan Shapovalov and the record company Universal Music. They have started using a hard core now: sex (heterosexual) on the children’s merry-go-round video “Half an Hour”, masturbation in front of the camera – video “Simple Movements”, suicide – video “They Not Gonna Get Us”, not to mention shameful photos, interviews, concerts. The mass media is filled with all kinds of dirty rumors.
The first song “I Lost My Mind” appealed to the public by its novelty, however this interest didn’t last long. Some believed that Tatu duet was falling apart and the producer uses these two young Lolitas offering them to the rich men for money.
But Shapovalov managed to find the better future for his project; he has signed a contract with the Universal Music. Thus, not just big but very big money was invested in Tatu’s future success on the West. The results were appropriate.
Èâàí Øàïîâàëîâ Mr. Shapovalov’s professional career is rather interesting: a children psychiatrist, not a very lucky advertising manager of one big company, and finally producer in search of “easy” money in show business. His monstrous ideas are far from being innocent, they are simply threatening. Tatu’s video filled with the glimpses of children’s white underwear and girls’ kisses is nothing compared to the obscenities and indecency of their concerts.
Tatu girls wear indecent close-fitting “children’s” underwear, put transparent shirts on, or just take them off, improperly, shamelessly touch each other on the stage, passionately give each other ardent kisses.

At first glance these girls seem to be innocent, but one look in their eyes proves the opposite. In the preview of one interview Julia (the brunette) was trying to teach the journalist ask proper questions. Julia wanted to hear one question in particular, “Are you lesbians?” The journalist was not willing to ask the question the young girl insisted on. It made Julia furious. Her madness can be compared to that of the prostitute who failed to seduce a client and earn money.
This is probably not the girls’ fault – they are too young and their parents are paid good money for being quiet. Tatu girls here is coming out from a baby age, but main negative side of this project will stay - a sexual usage of image of child and teenager.
They are just a convenient, obedient material in the hands of a perverted producer. Mr. Shapovalov is notoriously “famous” among the singers and his name is always mentioned with a feeling of distaste. Mr. Shapovalov professionally touches upon the secret hidden human vices and sins; he could have earned money showing a circus of ugly monsters to the world.
But this is not the main thing. The question we want to ask is the following, “Why did only Parent’s Committee of Great Britain doubt the moral aspect and influence of Tatu’s concerts (in other words sexual exploitation of teenagers and an obvious pedophilic image of the project)? Why did no one think about it in Russia? Why did no one put an end to it?
May be this is the problem of stereotypes “gay=pervert=pedophile”? “Lesbian=pervert=Lolita”?

The mass media hunger for Tatu’s news is simply amazing. Almost any word that comes out of the creative producer’s mouth is of main focus. The problems of children’s death, juvenile delinquency – this is just “boolshit” compared to the “Intimate Notes of Tatu” written by a very professional, not a girl’s hand. Some of the journalists seem to be very proud of Tatu’s “success” in the “international market” truly believe that we have finally found something good to offer to the West besides our traditional matryoshkas. We want to ask, “What are you proud of? Your naked asses shown to everyone for three cents?”
The project has nothing to do with lesbians. The thing is that having explored the Internet resources Ivan Shapovalov has come to the conclusion that porno-sites with lesbians and children are of great interest among the public. But he was trying to find something that wouldn’t be against the criminal law. That is how the idea to involve lesbians appeared.
Together we are trying hard to fight for our rights, to help people understand that we are equal members of the society, to treat us respectfully and accept us seriously, but such scandalous images as Tatu (with the help of money) are destroying all our attempts to change something for the better, proclaiming things similar to “We are lesbians, we are stupid, but we are sexy. We are born to seduce men and that is exactly what we are doing.” That’s why this girls’ duet is appealing to some Russian politicians, for instance Mr. Mitrofanov, who are not ashamed to use this name for their own purposes.
Fashionable “Tatumania” has flooded our country with a mighty wave and the consequences of this disease are to be estimated by the psychologists and psychiatrists.
Children’s pornography, sexual exploitation of the kids are considered to be the worst crimes all over the world and it’s a high time for our numerous Committees and Departments to open their eyes and do something about Mr. Shapovalov’s activity they seemed to be unaware of. And we just have to hope, wait and see.
